Ph.D. Students

Q. What Do We Expect for Ph.D. Students?

  1. Strong Motivation. Enjoy conducting research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interactive System Design, UX, and Digital-Physical Convergence.
  2. Proactive Initiative. In grad school, nobody will tell you exactly what to do next. You need to be able to take the initiative and try things without being told.
  3. Desisgn/Implementation Skills. While hands-on development skills are preferred, they are not a strict requirement. What matters most is your willingness to learn and grow.
  4. At Least Two Publications in top-tier international journals or conferences (e.g., CHI, International Journal of HCI, TOCHI, or similar venues). This reflects our lab’s focus on contributing impactful and high-quality research to the global academic community.
  5. Communication Skills. Communication skills can be learnt during the PhD, but you need to start out willing to share and learn. If you are extremely shy/do not talk up, it will not matter how smart you are or how great your work is.

Q. How to Apply?

To officially join our lab as a Ph.D. student, you must apply to Yonsei University / Graduate School / Department of Innovation and secure admission. But before then, please send the following documents to my email along with a brief introduction about yourself.

(1) Your CV or Resume
→ Include education/work background, and skill sets
(2) A list of publications or projects (if applicable)
→ If possible, send a copy of your papers or portfolio.
(3) Research Proposal (1~2 page)
→ A statement detailing your research interests, goals, potential approaches, and why you’re interested in our lab.

Master Students

Q. What Do We Expect for Master Students?

  1. Strong Motivation. Enjoy conducting research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interactive System Design, UX, and Digital-Physical Convergence.
  2. At least one publication in a domestic or international journal (top-tier or 2nd rank).
  3. Not being afraid to dive into the implementation and design of new systems. While hands-on development skills are preferred, they are not a strict requirement. What matters most is your willingness to learn and grow. To support this, we provide access to online learning resources and guidance to help you acquire the necessary skills.

Q. How to Apply?

To officially join our lab as a master student, you must apply to Yonsei University / Graduate School / Department of Innovation and secure admission. But before then, please send the following documents to my email along with a brief introduction about yourself.

(1) Your CV or Resume
→ Include education/work background, and skill sets
(2) Research Interest Description (max 3 paragraphs)
→ A statement detailing your research interests and expected achievement from the masters program.

Undergraduate Interns

Q. What Do We Expect for Undergraduate Interns?

The goal of our lab’s internship program is to provide students with the oppportunity to gain experience in design research projects and its procedures. Depending on specific internship track, students will take on one or more of the following tasks: (i) learn how to plan experiments for design research, (ii) conduct experiments, and (iii) analyze findings and discuss how the results can inform and inspire future designs. Ultimately, the outputs can be published in the form of an academic paper achievement or a design award.

Q. What are the possible internship tracks?

We offer three types of internship tracks as below. The first two tracks (Track A & B) involve more active, engaging, and ownership-driven roles, while the last track (Track C) entails a relatively passive role.

TRACK A: For students who already have a specific research topic in mind:
→ We will plan a new design research project together regarding a particular topic (to answer the research question that the student wants to explore.
TRACK B: For students who are open to explore any research projects actively:
→ The student will be assigned one of the small projects that the currently ongoing in the lab.
TRACK C: For students who just want to serve as an research assistant:
→ The student will be assigned specific tasks (e.g., conducting surveys or interviews, recruiting participants, or creating videos) to complete within a set timeframe.

Q. How to Apply?

Undergraduate students from any institution are welcome to join as interns, regardless of their home affiliation. If you are interested in, please send the following information to my email along with a brief introduction about yourself.

TRACK C:
→ Track C may not always be available. Please send an email inquiry to check if tasks are currently available.

What Do I Offer to Students?
  1. Individual Attention. If I am working with an open door, you are welcome to stop by for a chat. You will not need to wait to schedule a meeting to talk in person.
  2. Research Freedom (especially for Ph.D. students). You will have a freedom to formulate your own research ideas and carry them to fruition. Of course, I will be helping you every step of the way so that you are not left without guidance. You will be the first author on any papers where you have done most of the work.
  3. Travel (especially for Ph.D. students). I will support your travel to conferences to present any first author publications from work we did together. Approved conference list can be found in Publication List.
  4. Tutorials for Prototype Development. I will provide practical tutorial to build AI/XR prototypes. If necessary, I provide access to online learning resources and guidance to help you acquire the necessary skills.
  5. Mentoring on writing, presentation, and other skills. A PhD is about more than just developing technical expertise. I will help refine your writing, presentation, networking, and other skills to help you in becoming a researcher with excellent communication skills.
  6. Support for Career Development. I would be happy to help you develop professional connections for both internships and full-time jobs. I will support applications for fellowships and awards.
  7. Intern Certificate (especially for undergraduate interns). The certificate of intern participation will be issued. "
