CDM2008: Design Research

Design research turns questions about people, contexts, and experiences into evidence that can guide responsible design decisions. This course introduces a systematic process for framing research, selecting qualitative methods, conducting fieldwork, synthesizing findings, and communicating actionable insights.

Opening Questions

What should we measure to answer the research question directly?
Which measures are valid, sensitive, and practical for this study?
How might task sequence or condition order affect the results?

Learning Goal

Select quantitative measures that directly address the research question and design a study flow that accounts for task order, manipulation checks, and counterbalancing.

- Participant criteria, within- versus between-subject design, and study flow
- Measurement–RQ alignment, order effects, and counterbalancing
In-class Activity:
- Translate Week 8 feedback into study decisions
- Define participants, study design, tasks, condition order, and duration
- Align each RQ and outcome with an appropriate measure
- Complete the Method Mapping for Participants, Study Design, Tasks & Procedure, and Measures
