CDM2008: Design Research

Design research turns questions about people, contexts, and experiences into evidence that can guide responsible design decisions. This course introduces a systematic process for framing research, selecting qualitative methods, conducting fieldwork, synthesizing findings, and communicating actionable insights.

Nov. 13 Stage 3: User Study

Week 11: Pilot Testing & Protocol Revision

Opening Questions

What kinds of failure should a useful pilot study reveal?
How can we distinguish participant confusion from a problem in the stimulus or protocol?
What must be revised before we can trust the main study?

Learning Goal

Use pilot testing to identify problems in stimuli, timing, procedure, and measurement, and revise the protocol so the main study can produce valid and reliable evidence.

In-class Activity

In-class Lecture:
- Pilot issue diagnosis, revision priorities, and main-study launch criteria
- Final Method guidance: mapping final protocol decisions into Sections 4.1–4.6
In-class Activity:
- Review evidence from at least one pilot session
- Diagnose issues by stimulus, task, protocol, measure, timing, and technology
- Revise the protocol, conduct a final dry run, and update the final mapping
- Complete the main-study launch check
In-class Submission:
- Pilot Notes & Revision Log + final Protocol-to-Method Mapping + launch decision · one per team
