CDM2008: Design Research

Design research turns questions about people, contexts, and experiences into evidence that can guide responsible design decisions. This course introduces a systematic process for framing research, selecting qualitative methods, conducting fieldwork, synthesizing findings, and communicating actionable insights.

Prepare one concise card that introduces a design-related context, experience, or behavior that you may want to explore during the semester. This is an exploratory starting point, not a finalized research proposal.

Contents should include

  1. Your Interest

    • Choose one context, experience, or behavior that interests you, and briefly explain why.

  2. Current Experience & Unresolved Point

    • Briefly describe what people currently do or experience in this context.
    • Identify one part that feels inconvenient, limited, confusing, or worth changing.

  3. Early Design Possibility

    • Add one possible design idea or relevant example.
    • Add three keywords for your interest.

Presentation

Bring the card to Week 2 and be prepared to introduce it briefly during interest sharing and team formation.

Contents should include

  2. Research Question & Hypothesis

    • Section 3.1 · RQ & Hypothesis: Provisional RQ, expected relationship or outcome, and the rationale for that expectation

  3. Related Work

    • Citations or links for at least three related academic papers or research-based design cases; no separate source-analysis report is required
